Juvenile Arrested in Steubenville Following Gunshot

STEUBENVILLE –A 14-year-old male was arrested by Steubenville Police with a loaded revolver after officers swarmed the area around the 500 block of Maxwell Avenue following a report of a gunshot on Monday.

It was the third day there were reports that shots had been fired in a one-block area that includes Maxwell Avenue, Plum Street and Lawson Avenue.

As a result, Police Chief William McCafferty said patrols in the area had been increased.

Police received a report that a shot had been fired at about 5:15 p.m. on Monday. Police crime cameras showed a male running into an alley near Maxwell Avenue. Officers saw a male matching the description in the 1400 block of State Street.

An officer got out of his cruiser with his gun drawn and ordered the juvenile to his knees. Another officer, while attempting to place the juvenile in handcuffs, noticed the butt of a .22-caliber revolver in the waistband of the juvenile’s pants, police reported. The gun had four live rounds and one spent casing, police reported.

The juvenile was taken to the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center, where he is facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm over a street.

McCafferty said a detective had interviewed the teen to try and determine if he had been involved in incidents where shots had been reported fired on Saturday and Sunday. The chief said the juvenile was on probation through juvenile court. A gunshot residue test was performed to determine if the teen had recently fired a gun.

A 16-year-old male was grazed in the head by a bullet during Sunday’s shooting incident that was reported around 7 p.m. in the 500 block of Maxwell Avenue.

Police reported a Mercedes turned onto the 500 block of Maxwell Avenue, followed by a Malibu. Two people on the sidewalk pulled out handguns and begin shooting, police reported. The teen hit by the bullet was in the Mercedes. The Malibu was found a short distance away unoccupied, and a handgun was found on the driver’s side floor, police reported. Police said the 16-year-old was an innoent bystander when the shooting started.

Police also are investigating reports that shots had been fired around 4:55 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Plum Street and Lawson Avenue.

Police received a call that said four to five shots had been fired. Five shell casings were found at the intersection of Plum Street and Lawson Avenue, according to an officer. Police reported people inside a gray SUV were seen sticking guns out of the vehicle’s window and firing shots.
