Shots Fired in Wheeling

By HEATHER ZIEGLER Associate City Editor WHEELING –Wheeling police recovered 14 shell casings after a report of shots fired early today in Center Wheeling near the Family Dollar store on Chapline Street.

According to police spokesman Philip Stahl, a call came into police at about 1:55 a.m.

The caller said shots had been fired on Chapline Street between 24th and 25th streets. Upon arrival, a woman outside of the Family Dollar store told police an unknown black man tried to steal her purse and assault her.

She then fled the area and told her boyfriend, who attempted to confront that person.

According to the complainant, shortly after her boyfriend arrived in the area of 25th and Chapline streets, gunshots were exchanged.

It is not known how many people were involved or exchanged shots. A vehicle was then seen fleeing south on 24th Street and north on Market Street.

A second witness reported hearing shots fired at 24th Street and Lane D (behind the store), where detectives also found shell casings.

There are no suspects at this time and the incident is under investigation. Nearby surveillance video also is being gathered.
