2nd District W.Va. Senate Debate Is Monday in New Martinsville

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The stage is set for a debate between the three candidates vying to replace longtime West Virginia Sen. Jeff Kessler in the Legislature.

Republican nominee Dr. Mike Maroney, Libertarian candidate H. John Rogers and Democratic nominee Lisa Zukoff will participate in the event, set for 7-8 p.m. Monday in Room 110 of West Virginia Northern Community College’s New Martinsville campus, located at 141 Main St. The debate, which is open to the public, is sponsored by The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, the Wetzel Chronicle and Tyler Star News in cooperation with WVNCC.

Kessler, D-Marshall, opted not to run for another term representing the 2nd District in the Senate, instead running unsuccessfully for governor. He had held the seat since 1997.

The 2nd District includes much of Marshall County, all of Wetzel, Tyler, Doddridge, Ritchie and Calhoun counties and parts of Monongalia, Marion and Gilmer counties.

Zukoff ran unopposed in the May Democratic primary, while Maroney defeated Sistersville resident Ginger Nalley for the GOP nomination. Rogers’ third-party candidacy was approved by Secretary of State Natalie Tennant in July.

Maroney, of Glen Dale, has been with Radiology Associates Inc., which serves six hospitals in the Ohio Valley, since 2003.

He serves as chairman of radiology at Reynolds Memorial Hospital and Wetzel County Hospital.

Zukoff, a Moundsville resident, owns a consulting company and co-owns Accessories Ltd., a small business in Moundsville, with her husband. She served as director of the Wheeling Housing Authority for 20 years.

Rogers, of New Martinsville, graduated from Reader High School and Harvard Law School and holds two graduate degrees in theology.
