Accident Closes Both Westbound Lanes of I-470 Near Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM —  Both lanes of Interstate 470, westbound at Bethlehem were closed again this morning due to another accident involving a tractor trailer.

Heavy rain falling this morning may have contributed to today’s accident. Wheeling Police Department Deputy Chief Martin Kimball said a semi truck struck a pole on I-470 causing the road to be shut down. There was no information about the driver or injuries. Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler said the eastbound lanes were open, however the westbound lanes remained closed at noon. He said West Virginia Division of Highways were hoping to reopen the eastbound lane of I-470 sometime after noon. He said, however, the westbound on-ramp to the highway at Bethlehem will be closed. Workers will need to replace the power pole.

A similar event occurred Thursday night when trucks collided on the rain-soaked road near the Bethlehem exit.  A West Virginia Division of Highways worker who was driving in his own pick-up truck tried to stop and help when a second tractor trailer crashed into him, causing his truck to flip on its side.
