Shots Fired in South Wheeling

Schools alerted during investigation

The Wheeling Police Department responded to a call of several shots fired in the 3100 block of Jacob Street in South Wheeling early Wednesday afternoon.

At about 2:30 p.m., a neighbor called police to report sounds of gunfire. According to Wheeling Police Department spokesman Philip Stahl, a total of six gunshots were fired from a cranberry-colored, four-door Chevrolet sedan with Ohio license plates.

Officials blocked off a portion of Jacob Street near the underpass of Interstate-470 to address the situation. Two of the shots fired hit a parked vehicle with no one inside.

Two schools in the area were notified of the shooting as a precaution. West Virginia State Police checked W.Va. 2 from Wheeling to Moundsville for the vehicle with negative results.

“We found shell casings with a vehicle receiving shots,” said an officer on the scene, Lt. Ken Prager.

Officers found a total of six shell casings, according to Stahl. A home was also met with gunfire with people inside the residence when the shooting began. The number of occupants is unknown to police and no one was injured.

A neighbor on Jacob Street said she heard the gunshots from the back of her home a few doors down. The resident also commented that a home on that block may be involved in drug activity, which she believes resulted in the shots fired.

Police officials do not know at this time who was involved in the shooting, but are aware that the shots came from a cranberry colored vehicle.

No injuries have been reported and officials are still investigating the scene.

The Wheeling Police Department asks anyone with information in regard to the shooting to call 304-234-3664.
