Fire Out At Former Ormet Plant

HANNIBAL — Multiple fire departments responded to a report of a blaze at the former Ormet Corp. plant in Monroe County.

Clarington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jim Hunt reported the fire was of an electrical nature. Hunt confirmed the fire occurred at the former plant’s rod room.

Hunt said the electricity had been shut-off for a couple of weeks while work was being done at the rod room area. He said the electricity had been re-energized at around noon, Thursday. Emergency responders received a call at around 3:15 p.m. regarding the fire.

“It wasn’t a major fire,” Hunt said, noting that some wooden materials and electrical contents were burned. He said an electrical box had “shorted out.” Hunt said Sardis and New Martinsville VFDs also responded to the fire.

Aluminum production stopped at the plant in 2013. Since then, it has been used as a site for multiple businesses involved in the oil and natural gas industry.
