Lack of Carnival Ride Vendor Leads Shadyside to Cancel Firemen’s Fest

SHADYSIDE — A longtime tradition in the village is being put on hold until next year because of issues securing a carnival ride vendor.

Ohio River and Western Fire District Fire Chief Dave Lenz said Thursday the Shadyside Firemen’s Festival will not be held this July because of issues in getting a rides vendor.

“The rides companies weren’t able to be here then,” said Lenz. “We’re going to get rides for next year. It’s not like we’re never going to do it again.”

Lenz said the company could have done it in June. Because Loop Fest already is happening June 15-17, the fire department decided it did not want to have another event in the same month.

Lenz said he understands why people are upset about the festival not taking place this year. Some plan their vacations and family reunions around the festival. The festival has been a staple in the community for several decades.

“We’ll be at the Loop Fest,” he said. “We’re going to do a drawing. We do a raffle every year. We send letters out and ask for a donation.”

Lenz said they will not be putting up their food tents during Loop Fest or having bingo, as both activities require expensive licenses in addition to renting tents.

“It just wouldn’t be profitable for us,” he said.

Lenz said the company is not able to book rides now for next year because once the companies go on the road it is nearly impossible to reach them.

“Some people thought it was done,” he said. “It’s not.”
