Wheeling City Council Fills Three Spots On Arts and Culture Commission

WHEELING — Three city residents have been appointed to the Wheeling Arts and Culture Commission.

The action was taken during a Wheeling City Council meeting last week. In attendance were Mayor Glenn Elliott and council members Ken Imer, Brian Wilson, Wendy Scatterday, Chad Thalman, Ty Thorngate and Dave Palmer.

Nominating motions by Scatterday were approved unanimously to name the new members of the Arts and Culture Commission: Dustin Allen, of 8 Fairview Terrace; Kelly White, of 719 Main St.; and Laura Roberts, of 1376 National Road. Allen is a Marine veteran; White is employed by Williams Lea and Roberts is a freelance writer.

In other action, council members had voted unanimously to designate last week as National Police Week and as the Week of Champions in the city. Deputy Chief Martin Kimball of the Wheeling Police Department accepted the police proclamation on behalf of city police officers.

The Week of Champions was declared to honor Wheeling Central Catholic High School, which won four West Virginia athletic championships in the 2017-18 season. Central’s football, hockey, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams captured state titles in their respective sports.

Thalman, a 2000 graduate of Central, said it has been “a magical year” for the school. He presented the proclamation to student athletes, coaches and other representatives of Wheeling Central.

Meanwhile, council members also voted unanimously to approve ordinances to pay $18,174 to WC Well Co. of Allison Park, Pennsylvania, for pressure reducing valves for the water treatment plant; to spend $48,950 with BBR Drilling Co., of Belmont, to construct a piling wall on Henderson Street; and to pay $211,959 to Hunter Truck Sales, of Smithfield, Pennsylvania, for a sanitation truck.

Council members also agreed unanimously to adopt six traffic rules. The measures create a handicapped parking zone on the south side of Power Avenue, establish a no-parking zone on Warwood Avenue between North Third Street and Warwood Commons, and set two-hour parking meter zones between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the south side of 16th Street; the north side of 14th Street; the west side of Market Street at 12th Street; and the east side of Market Street at Lane 7.

City Clerk Brenda Delbert announced that requests to operate a private club have been filed by Brew Keepers, LLC at 2245 Market St. and by LJ’s Hoagie King LLC at 3900 Jacob St. The business owners plan to file applications for licenses from the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration.
