Early Polls Show Manchin in Front in U.S. Senate Race

Three Out of Four Polls Show Patrick Morrisey Trailing Behind by 13 Percentage Points

MANCHIN

WHEELING — Three early polls conducted in the race for U.S. Senate in West Virginia — including one Republican survey — show Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin leading the race by as much as 13 percentage points.

Manchin, D-W.Va., and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, a Republican, each won their party’s respective nomination in the May 8 primary election.

The results of a poll released this week by the Republican firm Gravis Marketing and reported by conservative Breitbart News have Manchin leading with the vote of 53 percent of respondents, to 40 percent for Morrisey.

The survey of 543 likely voters was conducted May 22.

A second poll was conducted by for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee by Hart Research Associates.

It places Manchin with 52 percent of the vote; and Morrisey, 40 percent.

The research was gathered May 15-16, and 602 likely voters were surveyed, according to the report.

The Manchin campaign commissioned a third poll from the Global Strategy Group.

The firm conducted its research May 13-16, and contacted 600 voters, according to data released by the campaign. It found 50 percent of voters supporting Manchin, and 42 percent with Morrisey.

A fourth poll has been conducted in the race, and it shows Morrisey with a narrow lead.

WPA Intelligence, a Republican research firm, did its survey May 10 of 400 likely voters.

The data gives Morrisey 46 percent of the vote; and Manchin, 44 percent.

Manchin’s campaign did not immediately respond Thursday to requests for comment. Morrisey’s campaign referred questions to WPA Intelligence.

And none of the polling reflected the presence of a potential third candidate in the race, former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship.

Blankenship lost his bid for the GOP nomination to the Senate seat to Morrisey in the primary election, and he has since announced he will run in the race as the nominee for the Constitution Party.

His candidacy, though, may be legally tested under the state’s “Sore Loser Law.” This statute prohibits candidates failing to win their party’s nomination in the primary election from running for the office under another party’s nominee in the general election.
