Ohio Valley Jaycees Plan ‘Canine Carnival’ Next Month at Wheeling Dog Park

WHEELING — As the dog days of summer wind down, the Ohio Valley Jaycees will host a “canine carnival” for all local dogs and their owners at Wheeling’s new dog park.

The event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at The Fitzsimmons Family Dog Park: A PetSafe Park in East Wheeling.

There will be opportunities for pet adoption at the event, as well as fun competitions for canines. Also planned are opportunities for dog owners to get their pets licensed and vaccinated. Vendors will be present.

Proceeds will benefit the “Dogs 4 Warriors” program at the Belmont Correctional Institution, which enlists inmates in training service dogs for veterans, according to Kasie Chastain, community development vice president for the Ohio Valley Jaycees.

Proceeds also will go to both the dog park and the Ohio County Animal Shelter, she said.

“Part of my position is to come up with events to raise money for other organizations,” Chastain said. “I came up with this idea because of the new dog park.

“This is the dog park now for the Ohio Valley,” she said.

The dog show at the event will award prizes in seven categories. Among those will be honors for best costume, best trick, heartiest howl and the fluffiest fur.

Chastain said she isn’t sure it is a real word, but there will be a prize for the dog seen as having the “waggiest” tail.

Dogs over the age of 8 will be eligible for the “valiant veteran” award and those under 2 years old will be considered for “most playful puppy.”

There will be a $5 entry fee for the first category entered, and $2 for each additional category.

Dog owners attending also will be asked to bring proof of their canine’s vaccination when they come to the event, while there also could be an opportunity there for dogs to get required shots.

“We’re on the search now for a vet to help with the rabies clinic,” Chastain said.

The rain date for the event is Sept. 22.
