Pro-Life Group Rallies in Wheeling To Support Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh

WHEELING — Dozens crowded Wednesday on the steps of the City-County Building to urge U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin to support President Donald Trump’s U.S. Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

The Susan B. Anthony List National Pro-Life Woman’s Caucus, along with other pro-life groups in the region, gathered in Wheeling to demand that Manchin, D-W.Va., approve Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the bench.

Director Sue Swayze Liebel called for Manchin to take a hardline stance in supporting Kavanaugh because of his pro-life stance.

“Our message today to Joe Manchin is: no more flip-flopping,” Liebel said. “We’re getting dizzy watching. You work for us, not the Democratic party bosses. … West Virginia voters are watching, and we’ll hold you accountable. West Virginia is a strong pro-life state, and confirming Kavanaugh is a step toward that.”

Liebel said Kavanaugh’s experience and record on other issues has increased their support of him.

“He has a stellar record — he’s a constitutional expert, he’s a fine jurist, he has amazing experience and he’s going to be good for the country,” she said.

Wheeling, Liebel said, is home to a number of pro-life advocates, which is why the group picked Ohio County as one of 32 stops on its tour of seven states.

Pam Stanley, executive director of West Virginians for Life, spoke out against Manchin. She attacked his votes supporting the Affordable Care Act and called for his removal from office during the midterm elections.

“Sen. Manchin does not represent West Virginia voters, or our values,” she said. “We will not only be selecting our U.S. senator, but also make our voices heard on abortion.”

Lori Cascio, a regional director for Students for Life of America, also spoke.

Wheeling resident Amy Carlson Miesel, holding a “Confirm Kavanaugh” poster, said she saw Kavanaugh’s confirmation as a matter of human dignity.

“I’m very, very much for doing everything we can, at all levels of society, to protect human dignity,” she said. “Human dignity is absolute, and the measure of any society is how it protects its most vulnerable citizens. … The Susan B. Anthony List does an incredible job turning thoughts and minds to political causes in all branches.

“I understand it’s tough in Washington, but we need (Manchin) to stand by his principles,” she said.

The Susan B. Anthony List recently launched a $1.6 million advocacy campaign this month to inform voters about Manchin’s political stances.

The rally was heckled by several passing drivers, booing as they drove past. Others honked their horns.
