Trump Coming Back To West Virginia

PARKERSBURG — The president of the United States has slated his third campaign rally in West Virginia.

The Trump campaign Friday said the next Make America Great Again rally featuring President Donald Trump will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 in Charleston at the Charleston Civil Center. It’s the third “that President Trump has held in the great state of West Virginia since he first began running for president in 2015,” the campaign said.

Trump, dogged by the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, also will encourage residents to vote for Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. Morrisey opposes incumbent Democrat Joe Manchin.

The visit could backfire and benefit Manchin more, according to Judy Stephens, chairman of the Wood County Democratic Party.

“A lot of West Virginians are not happy with what’s going on in Washington,” she said.

A turning point was the immigration issue and the president’s decision that caused the separation of young children from their parents who crossed the border from Mexico into the United States, Stephens said. Children were held in detention centers.

“Anybody who is a parent, that’s going to rub them the wrong way,” Stephens said.

While it won’t matter to hard-core Trump supporters, those who took a chance on Trump and are waiting for his policies to help them are having doubts about voting for him again, said Walt Auvil, a state Democratic committeeman.

Trump campaigned in 2016 about not being part of the Washington establishment. However, with Morrisey’s ties to lobbyists and the pharmaceutical industry, “you start to look like the Washington crowd you’re running against,” Auvil said.

As the president keeps visiting West Virginia, Morrisey will appear to look more like he’s from Washington “and Joe’s the hometown boy,” Auvil said.

Trump is expected to talk about the economy, including record-low unemployment and rising incomes, and how it benefits West Virginians, the campaign said.

Trump also will discuss securing full funding to build the wall between Mexico and the United States, fair and reciprocal trade deals, the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and support Morrisey, a release from the Trump campaign said.

“President Trump loves the people of West Virginia and looks forward to celebrating with them our booming economy that’s delivering record job growth and rising incomes to hardworking West Virginia families,” said Michael Glassner, chief operating officer for Donald J. Trump for President Inc.

Trump will remind voters what’s at stake in the midterm elections and encourage the vote for Morrisey, Glassner said.

“I’m honored to welcome President Trump back to West Virginia, because he knows we must send a true Trump ally and a conservative fighter to the U.S. Senate,” Morrisey said. “Trump and West Virginians know that liberal Joe Manchin has failed our state on the issues that matter most by pushing for gun control, funding Planned Parenthood and supporting Hillary Clinton’s coal-killing campaign.

“President Trump fights for the men and women of West Virginia, and it is time we elect a conservative fighter to the U.S. Senate who will stand with our president,” Morrisey said.
