Wheeling Murder Defendant Gets Drug Sentence

DEANDRE DAVIS

WHEELING — One of two brothers accused of murdering a man last year on Wheeling Island has been sentenced in federal court in an unrelated drug case.

Senior U.S. District Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr. sentenced DeAndre L. Davis, 27, of Wheeling, to seven years in prison for distributing cocaine. In May, Davis pled guilty to one count of distributing cocaine base within 1,000 feet of a protected location, according to the U.S. Attorney Bill Powell.

Specifically, the federal government had charged Davis with selling cocaine in July 2017 near Riverview Towers in Wheeling. He could have faced up to 180 years in prison and fines totaling up to $9 million.

The sale occurred shortly before the Wheeling Police Department said it was looking for Davis in connection with a murder that happened in a few months before.

In that case, police said Davis and his brother, Jordan Davis III, killed Ahmid Saleam Hinton at about 1:40 a.m. May 9, 2017, in the area of Zane and South Penn streets. Several people had reported hearing gunshots in the area.

When police arrived, they found William Hinton standing next to his mortally wounded brother, who was lying on the sidewalk.

Police said they asked Ahmid Hinton before he died who had shot him. He responded, “D.D. did, man.” “D.D.” is a nickname of DeAndre Davis, according to police.

Ahmid Hinton later died at a local hospital. Police were unable to obtain a statement from him beyond what he told officers at the scene.

William Hinton allegedly told police he may have been the intended target of the shooting, which he believed was retribution for a previous altercation between him and the Davis brothers’ uncle at a Wheeling Island bar.

Although police arrested Jordan Davis in July, they did not find DeAndre Davis until October.

On Aug. 13, Jordan Davis took a Alford Plea. In doing so, he did not admit guilt but agreed that he likely would lose at trial. He will return for sentencing at a later date before Circuit Court Judge David Sims.

Meanwhile, DeAndre Davis’ murder trial has been continued several times. Most recently, Sims granted in June his motion to continue it until Sept. 17 to allow his new attorney time to familiarize himself with the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Vogrin prosecuted the federal drug case on behalf of the government.
