County Leaders Across West Virginia Meet To Certify Election Results Today
WHEELING — The official canvass of the Nov. 6 general election takes place today at courthouses across West Virginia.
In Ohio County, the canvass is set to begin at 9 a.m. in the Commission office at the City-County Building, 1500 Chapline St., Wheeling. County commissioners will convene their regular meeting at 10 a.m. following the canvass.
There are no results on the ballot in Ohio County that were close enough to be affected by today’s canvass.
In Hancock County, however, just eight votes separate Republican Tommy Ogden and Democrat incumbent Jeff Davis in the race for county commissioner.
Provisional ballots deemed eligible, and mailed absentee ballots postmarked prior to Nov. 6, will be added to vote totals today.
There were 593,900 ballots cast across West Virginia for the Nov. 6 general election, and there are 1,245,849 registered voters in the state, according to information provided by the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office.
State turnout for the general election exceeded 47 percent, and two of the six counties in the Northern Panhandle posted figures exceeding that amount, the data indicated.
The highest turnout was in Ohio County, which reported a 54.89 percent voter turnout. There were 15,977 ballots cast in the county from among 29,105 eligible voters.
Also exceeding state figures was Marshall County, where 51.81 percent of voters cast ballots. There are 21,105 registered to vote in the county, and 10,948 cast ballots.
Elsewhere, Hancock County had a turnout of 43.62 percent. Registered voters in the county total 23,413, and 10,212 voted in the election.
Brooke County posted a turnout of 42.84 percent. There were 7,914 ballots cast there among 18,474 eligible voters.
Wetzel County turnout was 42.66 percent. There are 11,777 registered voters in the county, and 5,024 cast ballots in the election.
In Tyler County, 44.52 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. There are 6,393 registered voters in the county, and 2,816 voted in the general election.
Election results will be officially certified following the canvass.
