WHEELING — City officials will consider plans today to revamp sewer systems in Wheeling neighborhoods during Wheeling City Council’s last meeting of the year.

Council will hold a public hearing on an ordinance regarding improvements to the city’s waterworks and sewer systems at 5:30 p.m. today on the first floor of the City-County Building, 1500 Chapline St. Council members then might vote on the matter.

The ordinance involves spending $10 million for the first phase of the city’s sewer projects, part of a plan approved in December 2017 that totals $28 million.

The project would involve replacing sewer lines across Wheeling, separating sewer lines from stormwater systems and improving wastewater treatment, City Manager Robert Herron said.

“Making sewer improvements in neighborhoods is a significant step forward,” Herron said.

The second phase of the projects will follow in two years and cost the remaining $18 million, he said.

The projects are the result of a 17 percent increase on the city’s sewer rates that council approved last December.

Also today, council will consider a proposition regarding a water improvement project with the engineering services firm CT Consultants. The project would provide engineering services for water wells at the city’s water treatment plant in addition to water mains around Wheeling.

Council also will hear financial statements from several city offices, such as the Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center, Wheeling Municipal Parking and Greater Wheeling Sports and Entertainment Authority.
