Marshall County Assessor Chris Kessler Found Dead
Cause of death not immediately known
MOUNDSVILLE — Marshall County Assessor Christopher Kessler died Tuesday morning in his McMechen home, multiple law enforcement and county officials confirmed.
The cause and manner of his death were not immediately released.
McMechen police Chief Don DeWitt said officers were called to Kessler’s home Tuesday morning, but declined to elaborate about the investigation. Other law enforcement officials in the county also confirmed Kessler’s death.
The Marshall County Assessor’s office was closed to the public Tuesday, and the county commissioners planned to convene an emergency meeting at 4:30 p.m. today.
County Commissioner Mike Ferro said he was a close personal friend with Kessler and saddened to learn the news.
“He’s going to be sorely missed,” Ferro said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
He did not know what the next steps would be or what would be discussed at Wednesday’s special meeting. Ferro said Kessler, 55, worked as county assessor for more than 20 years and was very “efficient” running the office.
“I’m sure the entire courthouse is devastated, especially for the people who worked with him,” Ferro said. “Chris was well liked.”
