Jessica Broski-Birch Hired as Bridge Street Middle School Principal

WHEELING — English and Language Arts Teacher Jessica Broski-Birch will be taking a new role as principal at Bridge Street Middle School.

The decision was approved unanimously Monday at a special meeting of the Ohio County Board of Education. Broski-Birch, who has taught at the school since 2012, will be taking the role following the resignation of Joseph Kolb, who stepped down following a civil lawsuit alleging he had sexually harassed three teachers. He resigned in May.

Broski-Birch was selected for the role at the recommendation of Superintendent Kimberly Miller.

“She’s an innovator, and she will bring a lot of new and engaging ideas to Bridge Street,” Miller said. “I believe her passion and enthusiasm for supporting teachers and students will be contagious.”

Miller’s recommendation was approved by a full board of Molly Aderholt, Zachary Abraham, Sarah Koegler, David Croft, and Christine Carder.

Broski-Birch is a former Bridge Street student, and said she is excited for the opportunity to remain with those she has worked with over the last several years.

“I’m overwhelmed with emotion at being given the opportunity to stay with my Bridge Street family in this capacity,” she said. “I believe that Bridge Street has wonderful things in store, and I look forward to a bright future.”

She has a continuing contract and will serve as principal until further notice.

“I really would like to tie in with the community and really open the door more with parents and community relationships,” she said. “I have ideas for professional development with my staff; Bridge Street does a great job collaborating, and I’d like to do more of that.

“I’m unbelievably honored and excited, and I can’t wait for the future.”

Also hired Monday evening were Rebecca Beiter as an Earth Space/Physical Science/General Science teacher at Wheeling Park High School.

; Ralph Smith as a custodian/handyman, also at WPHS; as well as Emily Armstrong and Alisha Curtin as Special Education instructors at Woodsdale Elementary School.

Additionally, Shane Glass and Jennifer Neff were recommended as head and assistant girls basketball coach, respectively, at Wheeling Middle School; and Marilynn Schnupp rescinded an earlier-approved resignation from her role as an Adult Education teacher at WPHS.
