Officials: West Virginia State Trooper Shot, Returns Fire and Kills Suspect

From Staff Reports

MARLINTON, W.Va. – A West Virginia state trooper from the Elkins detachment was shot Monday evening and returned fire, killing the suspect who shot him, officials said.

Trooper First Class Josh M. Tallman was transported by helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital Monday night. His condition has not been announced.

According to a Tuesday West Virginia State Police press release, Pocahontas County Sheriff J.P. Barlow was investigating a one-vehicle wreck at about 6 p.m. when he was shot at by a man with a rifle.

Police officers from other counties responded to the scene and searched “a wooded area” for the suspect. Tallman found the suspect in the woods and was shot in the abdomen, the release states.

Tallman returned fire and shot and killed the suspect, officials said.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., released the following statement about the incident: “Gayle and I are deeply saddened to hear of the shooting of State Trooper Josh M. Tallman in the line of duty last night in Pocahontas County. We are always grateful for those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve West Virginians. Trooper Tallman’s family, friends and loved ones will remain in our prayers and we pray for his speedy recovery.”

Gov. Jim Justice stated, “Cathy and I are praying for Trooper Tallman and his family during this incredibly difficult time. We ask all West Virginians to join with us in wishing him a speedy recovery.”
