Lawrence Petrella

PETRELLA, Lawrence, 90 of Weirton, died Oct. 10, 2009 at the Weirton Medical Center, Weirton, W.Va.

He was born Oct. 20, 1918 in Colliers, W.Va., a son of the late Patsy and Elizabeth Schober Petrelli.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Joanna Cesta Petrella on January 14, 1984. He was the last remaining of 10 children, preceded in death by four brothers: Henry Petrelli from Colliers, Joseph Petrelle from Steubenville, Caesar Petrelli from Mingo Junction, and Bill Petrelle from Follansbee, as well as five sisters, Stella Hedmond from Weirton, Theresa Grieco of Weirton, Margaret Paul from Colliers, Lena Hedmond from Follansbee and Mary Mills from Colliers.

He was a 1938 graduate of Follansbee High School, and he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Goodwill Grange for many years, a retired steel worker from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, and a lifelong member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Weirton.

Lawrence was an avid gardener and had a garden ever since he was a young boy until the last couple of years. Each winter found him plotting his flower and vegetable beds while he eagerly awaited the seed and plant catalogs. He found great peace with his hoe and carefully tilled rows, and at harvest, he joyfully shared his abundance with family and friends.

Surviving are his wife Lorraine of Weirton, two daughters, Linda DiBartolomeo of Germantown, Maryland and Marcia (Leroy) Richter of Colliers, W.Va.; two sons, Lawrence (Linda) Petrella of Richmond, Ohio and Michael Petrella of Colliers, W.Va; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009 from 2-8 p.m. at the James Funeral Home, 1245 Main St., Follansbee, WV. Services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Main Street, Weirton, WV at 11 a.m. with Fr. Larry Dorsch officiating. Interment to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Full military honors to be conducted by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad. Memorial contributions should be made to St. Paul’s Catholic Church, or to the Alzheimer’s research fund at 1235 Ginger Cresent Virginia Beach, VA 23453.
