MRZLEK, Thomas John, 91, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., died on Monday, May 10, 2010, in Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation and Nursing.
Born March 15, 1919 in Benwood, Marshall County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Marko and Katherine Mrzlak.
He was a member of St, Michael’s Catholic Church Wheeling, W.Va. He attended St. Catherine’s Parochial School in Benwood and Wheeling Business College. He served with the U. S. Army during World War II as a surgical technician, landing on Normandy Beach caring for sick and wounded patients for the 24th evacuation hospital in the European Theater of Operations from December 1943 to December 1945 and received four Battle Stars.
He was a retired U.S. Postal Service mail carrier. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and was a self-taught pianist. One of his proudest moments was playing the piano at a party at the Waldorf Astoria Ballroom.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Marie Mirandy Mrzlek, two sisters, Anne Mrzlak and Dorothy Wendell and two brothers, Michael Mrzlak and John Mrzlak.
Private graveside services will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.
