Gloria Johnston

JOHNSTON, Gloria Jane Holmes, 66, of Mt. Olivet, Wheeling, entered eternity with her Lord among the hosts of heaven on Saturday, October 9, 2010.

Gloria was born in Wheeling on September 6, 1944, the youngest daughter of Alta Clyde and Margaret Creighton Holmes.

She was a devoted wife of Ronald and loving mother of Karen. She always loved children and mothered many besides her only child.

She was a Licensed Social Worker and touched the lives of hundreds of children and families as a Children’s Protective Services Worker for 28 years. She served as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and Church Camp counselor for many years. Her strong Christian faith directed her life of serving and caring selflessly for others as an angel of mercy. She was a previous volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She loved music, had a beautiful beaming smile and pretty blue eyes. She had a smiling voice that could be heard and “seen” even over the phone. Gloria and her husband were co-leaders of a Bible Fellowship class for special needs adults for fifteen years.

Gloria retired from the W.V. Dept. of Health & Human Resources Marshall County Office in 2006. She was a past board member of Glade Run Lutheran Children & Family Services in Pennsylvania. She was recognized in 2008 by the West Virginia Child Care Association for her contribution to children with a Community Child Service Provider Award.

She was a member of Edgwood Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Donald L. Holmes, three sisters, Ethel Lish, Delores Selby and Barbara Gregg.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald C. Johnston of 46 years, a daughter, Karen S. Leite and her husband, James E. of Delaware, Ohio, one brother, Allan Holmes and his wife, Patricia of Wheeling, a sister, Margaret Faye Kutrovac and her husband, George of Benwood, WV, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special niece Bonnie Vaonakis of Wheeling.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, National Road at Bethany Pike, Wheeling. The Service of Christian Burial will be held at Edgwood Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1154 National Road, Wheeling, on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. with The Rev. Elizabeth Westphal officiating. Friends will be received AT THE CHURCH beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
