Sister Martina Staud
STAUD, Sister Martina (Teresa Frances), C.S.J., 90, died at Mt. St. Joseph on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.
Teresa Frances, the fourth of eight children of the late Aloysius and Eleanor Grottendieck Staud, was born in Fairmont on December 3, 1919. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Church and completed her elementary and secondary education in her parish schools.
Teresa Frances entered religious life at St. Joseph Convent in Wheeling on August 24, 1938. When she began her novitiate experience there on April 11, 1939, she received the name of Sister Mary Martina. Two years later she made her first profession of the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience as a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph.
Sister Martina earned a degree as Bachelor of Science in Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. From 1940 until 1942 she ministered at St. John’s Home for Boys. For the next 39 years, she taught in diocesan schools: St. Agnes in Charleston; St. James and St. Mary in Clarksburg; Fairmont Catholic Grade School; St. Francis Borgia in Grasselli; St. Joseph in Huntington; St. Francis Xavier in Moundsville; Blessed Sacrament in South Charleston; St. Thomas in Thomas; Corpus Christi, Sacred Heart and St. Vincent de Paul in Wheeling. From 1981 until 1992, she served diocesan bishops and their guests at the Bishop’s Residence in Wheeling, providing supportive, domestic and culinary services. Since that time she has dedicated her life to prayer and community service at Mount St. Joseph in Wheeling.
Sister Martina was preceded in death by her parents and all but three siblings.
She is survived by two sisters, Sister Marjean Staud of Mount St. Joseph and Rita Blazek of Cleveland; her brother, Aloysius Staud of Exton, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received from 1-9 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, at Mount St. Joseph, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, where vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Mount St. Joseph Chapel. Interment in the Sisters of St. Joseph section at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
