BANIG, Richard “Dick” Alvin, Sr., 90, of Shadyside, Ohio, died Saturday, July 9, 2011 in the OVMC, Wheeling.
He was born January 29, 1921 in Bellaire, a son of the late William and Bertolia Woods Banig.
Dick was retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel-Martins Ferry Plant, the 842nd Engineering Battalion (Army Reserves), was Past Commander of the DAV, member of the American Legion Post 52, Elks Lodge 419, lifetime member of the Bellaire Alumni Association, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific for 36 months.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his wife Doris Harper Banig, 5 brothers; William, Harold, Donald, Charles and Jack, and 4 sisters; Eleanor Crawford, Harriet Angelo, Minnie Zelder and infant Ann Banig.
Surviving are 4 children; Richard (Linda) Banig, Ronald (Cindy) Banig all of Akron, Christina (William) Marinacci of Bellaire, Bill (Carla) Banig of Gathersburg, MD, a sister Ruth Carrick of Bellaire, 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, July 12 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Bauknecht Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Crematory, 441-37th St., Bellaire, where services will be held on Wednesday at noon with Rev. Bill Marinelli officiating.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Bellaire.
DAV #117 will conduct services at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellaire Alumni Association or the First United Methodist Church.
