Liberatore Orsini

ORSINI, Liberatore A. “Libby,” “L.A.,” 87, of Follansbee passed away on Monday, September 3, 2012 at Trinity West Hospital, Steubenville, OH.

L.A. was born in Pettorano Sul Gizio, Italy on May 31, 1925. He was the first child of late Pietro and Clara (Ciccolella) Orsini.

L.A. was a 1942 graduate of Follansbee High School. He enlisted in the Navy in May of 1943. Libby served on the USS Tracy DM1 and spent three years in the South Pacific. The USS Tracy with Libby and the crew aboard was one of the first ships to enter Nagasaki Harbor in Japan after the end of the war and participated in seven major battles for which it received seven battle stars. In August of 1946, Libby was honorably discharged from the Navy to return Home.

L.A. began his college education at the former West Liberty State College, now West Liberty University, graduating with a degree in Business Education. He then taught at Union High School in Burgettstown, PA from one year. During that time he went on to complete his master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA and completed more graduate work at WVU in Morgantown, WV.

In the fall of 1950, he began teaching at Follansbee High School until 1955 when he left to become the Director of Finance and Assistant Professor of Business at the former West Liberty State College. He spent the next 39 years at that position and retired June 1994 and was granted status as Director of Finance Emeritus in 1995.

He is a member of the Los Vaqueros de Farmacia (a group of men headed by William (Buck) Hart as El Jefe). This organization would fundraise every year on a horseback riding trip across the mountains of Arizona for the Orme School.

L.A. was a founding member of the Hall of Fame Committee of West Liberty. He was a charter member of the West Virginia Colleges and Universities Fiscal Officers, serving as President for two years. Libby served as administrative representative to the West Liberty State College Advisory Board. He served on the committees to select a President at West Liberty State College for two Presidential selections. Libby is a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Brooke County Scholarship Foundation, West Liberty State College and University of Pittsburgh Alumni Associations, the Delta Sigma Phi – National Business Fraternity, Follansbee Lions Club, American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, Weirton, and the National Naval Minewarfare Association where he served as Secretary and just recently President. Libby served a six year term as a commissioner of the West Virginia Board of Banking and Financial Institutions. He was a member of the Brooke County Board of Education from 1970-1982 serving two presidential terms.

In 1991, L.A. was awarded the Medal of Distinction from the former West Liberty State College and in 1994, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of West Liberty. He received a Resolution of Friendship and Appreciation from West Virginia’s Colleges’ and Universities’ Fiscal Officers, Resolution of Commendation for Leadership and Service as Treasurer of the West Liberty State College Foundation, Inc., and 2004 Brooke County Hall of Fame.

In addition to his parents, Libby is preceded in death by his two sisters, Bridget and Julia Ann.

Libby is survived by his loving wife, Dora E. (Grilli) Orsini of Follansbee, whom were married on April 15, 1950, one devoted son, Ronald and his wife Bonnie Smallwood Orsini of Follansbee, three adored grandchildren, Brian Orsini of Follansbee, and Adriana and Francesca Orsini of Las Vegas, NV, a cherished brother, Henry “Hank” and his wife, Chappy Orsini of Steubenville, OH, and several nieces and nephews.

Family and Friends will be received on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 6-9 p.m. and on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. with Vigil Service at 8:30 p.m. at the James Funeral Home, 1245 Main Street, Follansbee, where the funeral will commence on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 9 a.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1017 Virginia Ave, Follansbee, with Reverend Msgr. Paul Hudock, Presiding.

Interment will follow with full military honors by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV.
