Evalyn Long

LONG, Evalyn S., 74, of Wheeling, WV and formerly the Hershey, PA area, went to be with the Lord at her home on Monday, October 8, 2012.

Evalyn was born on April 18, 1938 in Hershey, PA.

She graduated from Messiah College, and then went onto receive a Post Graduate diploma from the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital. She practiced public health nursing at Navajo Mission Hospital. While working on her Masters at Grace-New Haven School of Nursing, she was an Obstetrics Instructor at Yale University. She married Walter H. Long, of Wheeling, in 1969. Together they served at Macha Mission Hospital (Zambia) from 1973-1977, where she was the Director of Macha’s Zambia Enrolled Nurse Training School. Upon returning to the States, they moved to Wheeling, WV and founded the Walter H. Long Teen Challenge for New Life. She was an Advanced Practice Nurse in Labor & Delivery and Childbirth Educator at Wheeling Hospital for 28 years. Evalyn established SHARE of the Upper Ohio Valley, and facilitated this pregnancy loss support group since the early 1990s. She received a Masters in Nursing from Duquesne University in 1999, and was a member of the Transcultural Nursing Society.

Evalyn held dual membership at First Baptist Church of Wheeling, and the Brethren in Christ Church. With a heart for the world, she was actively involved in a local young adults ministry, with international students at several local universities, and would frequently travel internationally lecturing on Obstetrics and Transcultural Nursing.

Evalyn was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Walter.

Surviving her are two daughters, Roberta Long of Tahoma, CA, and Julia Feitner and husband, Aaron of Pittsburgh, PA; three grandsons, Alexander Feitner, Paul Kenyon, and Harrison Feitner; three siblings, Marie McBeth and husband, Joe of Chambersburg, PA, Julianna Henry and husband, Ray of Millerstown, PA, and Albert F. Schock Jr., and wife, Patty of Waynesboro, PA.

Friends were received on Thursday and Friday at Kepner Funeral Home, Wheeling, WV, and Evalyn’s life was celebrated on Saturday, October 13, at First Baptist Church, Wheeling WV.

A viewing will also be held at the Messiah Village Chapel, Mechanicsburg, PA on Sunday, October 14, from 1-3 with a memorial service following. Interment will be at the Schock Family Cemetery in Washington Boro, PA.

Evalyn requested that memorial contributions go toward the establishment of a sculpture at the Memorial Garden at Oglebay Park in remembrance of little ones taken too soon, and toward Macha Mission Hospital’s medical library. A fund is being established. Contributions may be mailed to Julia Feitner, 236 Dogwood Circle, Baden, PA 15005.
