GRINDLEY, Robert ‘Grin’ Bushnell, died at home on October 10, 2012, after months of declining health.
Robert was born July 18, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended and graduated from Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, MI and Union College in Schenectady, NY. He was an active member of Chi Psi fraternity at Union.
‘Grin’ married Marilyn Kender (a fourth generation Wheeling citizen) and they have lived in Wheeling for the past 45 years. ‘Grin’ served in the U.S. Navy and Reserve as a lieutenant. ‘Grin’ was the manager and then the president of The Hawley Corporation (Wheeling, WV), from 1970 to 1997.
‘Grin’ was active in the community. He served at Habitat For Humanity, WATCH, Ohio County SPCA, Ohio Valley Peace (Peace Education & Community Effort), Rotary, Cub Scouts, The Short Circuit Club and Russell Nesbitt. Statewide ‘Grin’ served on the Board of The ACLU & The Silver Haired Legislature. ‘Grin’ was a member of St Matthews Episcopal Church in Wheeling.
‘Grin’ is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn; his son, John Kender Grindley of Wheeling; his daughter Anne Grindley Stiltner, Myrtle Beach, SC; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and Grin’s sisters Jean Grindley Akerson of Wellesley, MA and Mary Grindley Shepard of New London, NH.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date for friends and family.
