WHEELER, Robert U., 92, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012, at the Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, after a long illness.
Robert was born on June 24, 1920, in Marion, Ohio, a son of the late James R. Wheeler and Alta (White) Kraft.
He was a 1938 graduate of Wheeling High School and was, at the time of his death, the oldest living member of Local 83 of the Plumbers and Pipefitters of Wheeling, where he was an apprentice instructor for the apprenticeship program for over 25 years. He was also a member of the Cave Club, Wheeling, for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his son, James Barry Wheeler.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty (Redeker) Wheeler; sons, Robert (Linda) Wheeler of Morgantown, W.Va., Bruce (Judy) of Austin, Texas and Brad (JoAnne Bosworth) of Wheeling; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a nephew and three nieces.
The family would like to thank Dr. Byron Van Pelt and the staff of the Bishop Hodges Continuous Care Center, for their kindness and care during Robert’s illness.
Friends will be received from 5:30 p.m. until time of funeral services at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, 1 Medical Park, Wheeling, WV 26003, or St. Alphonsus Church, 2111 Market St., Wheeling, WV 26003.
