John Handlan

HANDLAN, John “Jay,” All-American basketball player for Washington & Lee University and former president of H.L. Yoh Company, Philadelphia, PA, and age 84, died January 10th, 2013.

He was born in Wheeling WV, February 2, 1928, to the late Sarah Jackson Handlan and William C. Handlan III. Jay was husband to Elizabeth “Betsy” Handlan for 60 years. Father of John (Beverly) of Prairie Brush, WA, Alfred (Amy) of Marietta, GA, Karen (Eric) Wimmer of Franklin, TN, Susan (Daniel) Rysz of Haddonfield, NJ, William (Maureen) of Moorestown, NJ., grandfather of 13 and brother of the late William C. Handlan IV.

Jay was a 1946 graduate of Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, WV and served three years in the U.S. Army.

The 1952 Washington & Lee graduate was admitted into their Hall of Fame in 1990 and was the third college player in modern history to score over 2000 points. His 66 point single game scoring record in the 1951 Furman game remains fourth all-time for Division I scoring. Following graduation Jay was drafted by both the NBA (Indianapolis) and the NFL (Cleveland, as a kicker), but opted to play basketball in the National AAU League for the Goodyear Wingfoots for which he played four years.

Jay joined Day & Zimmerman in June, 1966 as an H.L. Yoh Company Division production manager. He remained with H.L. Yoh for twenty five years and retired as President of the company and board member of Day and Zimmerman in 1991. As a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church, Jay took great pride in coaching the boys basketball team and served as an usher for services at The Auditorium in Ocean Grove, NJ during the summer. Avid lifetime golfer and former member of Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield, NJ, Jay spent his retirement as a ranger at Ocean Palm Golf Course in Flagler Beach FL.

A private family viewing was held at Dale Woodward Funeral Homes, P.A., in Ormond Beach, FL. A memorial service and burial will be held in Haddonfield, NJ at a later date.
