Roderick Jamison

JAMISON, Captain Roderick Craig (U.S. ARMY RETIRED), 72, of Weirton, WV, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, PA. He is the son of the late Denward Ray and Gladys Tyo Jamison.

He was born in Steubenville, OH, on October 14, 1940.

He volunteered for the US Army and for two tours of duty in Vietnam. As one of the most decorated military heroes in West Virginia, his awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry for heroism, five bronze stars (two for heroism and three for meritorious Achievement), three Vietnamese Campaign Medals, The Army Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnamese Civic Action Medal.

Captain Jamison served the first tour in Vietnam as a platoon leader in an armored unit of the 101st Airborne Division and in the Mekong Delta as part of a unit with the only air cushion vehicle unit in Vietnam. During his second tour of duty he was responsible for an Infantry Company and 17 hamlets within the Thoi Lai area. As part of the 1st Squadron, 14th Armored Calvary he served as a Border Legionnaire patrolling the German-Soviet Demarcation Line as part of the Cold War. Captain Jamison was extremely proud to be an American and his association with the Army 3rd Squadron, 5th Division (Black Knights). He was an expert with Jungle warfare, rifle, pistol, and machine guns. Captain Jamison held every rank from private to Captain and served the Army in such roles as Drill Sergeant, Nuclear Logistics Officer, Hovercraft Pilot, and retired after 20 years in 1977.

His military accomplishments were recently published in a book of West Virginia military heroes.

He enjoyed anything to do with computers and worked for various companies related to computing before joining the US Postal Service in 1986, and retiring from the New Cumberland, WV post office in 1995.

Roderick is survived by his wife of 45 years, JoAnn Zuza Jamison; son, Denward Jamison (fiance Joyce Tomaszewski Lydick); grandson, Parker Roderick Jamison, all from Frederick, MD; brother, Ray “Dan” Denward Jamison (Darlene) of New Cumberland, WV; sister, Nancy Karen DiLullo (Matteo) of Oldsmar, FL; and mother-in-law, Louise Zuza of Weirton, WV.

Visitation will be at the Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home, Inc., 380 Penco Road, Weirton, WV, on Friday February 1, 2013, from 2 p.m. until time of funeral at 6 p.m. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, on a date and time yet to be assigned.
