Thomas Smith

SMITH, Thomas R. “Dino,” 52, of McMechen, WV, was called home on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, WV.

He was born February 6, 1961, in Wheeling, a son of the late Norman S. Smith Sr. and Patricia Campbell Smith of McMechen.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Benwood; a member of both the McMechen and Benwood volunteer fire departments; and a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Blake Brothers Post 46, Benwood.

Dino was the manager of sports teams at Bishop Donahue High School for over 30 years.

He was a special friend to all who knew him. He touched many lives and never knew a stranger. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Scott Melko, and a nephew, Owen Smith.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three brothers: Norman (Linda) Smith Jr. of Benwood, WV, and Kelly (Mary Beth) Smith and James (Linda) Smith, both of Glen Dale, WV; two sisters, Erin (John) Bonar of McMechen and Monica Melko of Wheeling; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Saturday and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 214 Marshall St., McMechen, where the McMechen and Benwood fire departments will hold a service at 7 p.m. Sunday. A vigil service will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2013 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Benwood, with the Rev. Dennis Schuelkens as celebrant.

Entombment in Mt. Calvary Mausoleum, Wheeling.
