CARROLL, Harlean L. (Mathews) was surrounded in love by her eight children when she died Friday, April 26, 2013.
She was born June 7, 1936, in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Harley E. and Mary T. Mathews.
Harlean was raised on Wheeling Island and later in East Wheeling. She was a 1954 graduate of Wheeling High School where she met her high school sweetheart, George Carroll. A first date on Valentine’s Day set two hearts in motion for a life-long journey of happiness.
Harlean and George were married on August 18, 1956 and together created a family of eight children; Kari(Vince) Wardell of Cross Lanes, WV, George E.Carroll, Jr. of Wheeling, Christine (Patrick) McDermott of Wheeling, Theresa(Mark) Thomas of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Harley(Amy) Carroll of N. Potomac, MD, Mary(Matthew) Kebbler of Mt. Lebanon, PA, John “Jack”(Jenna) Carroll of Huntingtown, MD and Clay(Meghan) Carroll of Wheeling.
They raised their family on Locust Avenue in Edgwood where everyone was always welcome.
Harlean enjoyed and supported local high school sports, especially Wheeling Park High and Linsly football and was an active member of the boosters for both schools for many years.
In addition to her children and 14 grandchildren, she is survived by a special sister-in-law, Nancy Roeder, two cousins, Charles and Paul Smith and several nieces and nephews.
Harlean was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, her parents, and sisters Sara Jo Wood and Patricia Naples.
Friends will be received on Monday, April 29, 2013 from 5-9 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, WV, where services will be held on Tuesday at the convenience of the family.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
