Esther Sonnefeld

SONNEFELD, Esther L., 91, formerly of Mar-Win Drive, Wheeling, died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

She was born February 12, 1922 in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Michael and Lena Pinto.

Esther was retired from Blue Cross/Blue Shield after 16 years of service and was a choir member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. She was a 20-year volunteer at Wheeling Hospital, worked as a home economist at Wheeling Electric and was an avid golfer, participating in numerous tournaments, as a member of the Wheeling Golf Club.

Esther’s hobbies included cooking, helping with numerous fund raisers and bakes sales, gardening and working in her yard, and playing with her Bridge Club for 40 years.

Esther loved WVU and Steeler football and supporting her grandchildren’s athletic events.

She made friends wherever she went.

In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband Carl L. Sonnefeld in October of 1958.

Surviving are her two sons Michael Sonnefeld and his wife Rachel Kearney of Bloomington, IN, David Sonnefeld and his wife Pamela of Corning, NY; two brothers John and Raymond Pinto; a sister Marie Pinto, retired Lt. Commander-U.S. Navy; sister in law Nancy Sonnefeld, all of Wheeling; five grandchildren, Caroline (and her fiance, Christopher Coy), Colleen Olivia, Carl, Leo and Colin Sonnefeld; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove, WV, where vigil services will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 15 at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Naegele as celebrant.

Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
