Thomas West

WEST, Thomas J. (Poppy), 89, of Tiltonsville, Ohio, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.

He was born May 2, 1924, in Tiltonsville, the son of the late Thomas B. and Hannah M. Dickinson West.

He was a member of the Tiltonsville United Methodist Church, a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel after 38 years of service in Yorkville, Ohio, an honorary member of the Tiltonsville Volunteer Fire Department, and member of the Dillonvale Eagles.

In addition he was a WWII veteran who served his God and Country, a member of the 8th Air Force 68th Squadron and the 44th Bomb Group, and member of the 44th Bomb Group Association. Throughout his military career, Tom was stationed at Shipdham, England and had the honor to fly on the B-24 Liberator.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Irma Dolfi West; brother, Walton West; sisters, Alberta Umbour, Leota Lowery, and Laura Masters.

Surviving is his son, Thomas (Paula) West Jr. of Tiltonsville, Ohio; daughter, Sandra (Jerry) Skatula also of Tiltonsville. Also survived by dear family member, his daughter-in-law, Eva West of Tiltonsville; three grandchildren, Kari (Hal) Biehl of Pittsburgh, Pa., Ryan (Ashley) West of Rayland, Ohio, and Allison West and her fiance Lance Lucarelli; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Skatula; two step-granddaughters, Teresa and Leigh Anna; two step-grandsons, Edward and Joseph; step-great-grandchildren, Noah, Kassidy, Alexa, Avah and Johanna; many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received to pay tribute to Thomas and celebrate his life on Sunday, May 12, 2013 from 2-9 p.m. at the Borkoski Funeral Home, Tiltonsville, Ohio.

Funeral will be on Monday, May 13th, from 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Dan Holt officiating.

Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Cemetery, Pleasant Grove, Ohio. Full military honors will be conducted by the Belmont County Council of the V.F.W. at 10:45 a.m. from the funeral home.
