WALLACE, Mary “Eddie” Crowell, 93, of Wheeling, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Wheeling Hospital.
She was born July 12, 1919 in Baton Rouge, LA, daughter of the late James and Eva Howell Crowell. She received her nursing degree at The Lady of the Lake Nursing School in Baton Rouge, LA. She was married to Drex Wallace in Denver, CO before shipping out to the Middle East. She was a WWII Army Combat Nurse in the Middle East Campaign and in Egypt and Aritraia. After the war she worked at the old Wheeling Hospital as a nurse and then nursing supervisor, followed by resident nurse and housemother at Wheeling College. During that time she received her B.A. from Wheeling College in 1976. After retirement she traveled the world with friends and family. Eddie was also a past member and president of Wheeling Sorupitus, United Methodist Women, and Christ United Methodist Church. She volunteered at Oglebay Park Mansion Museum, Meals on Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity in her later years.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Drexel Wayne Wallace of Wheeling, and four brothers, Perry, Jim, Cadmus and John Crowell of Baton Rouge, LA.
She is survived by a sister, Marcella Whitehead and her husband, Ralph of Baton Rouge, LA; nieces and nephews, Louise Hoehl of Wheeling, Stewart Hoehl of Harvey, LA, Jamie Miller and her husband, Rodney of Ethel, LA, Kristie McAdams and her husband, Doug of Greenwell Springs, LA, Shellie Fisher and her husband, William of Slaughter, LA, Mike Crowell and his wife, Renee of Baton Rouge, LA, Dr. Jim Crowell and his wife, Dr. Sterling Crowell of Baton Rouge, LA, Jeff Crowell and his wife, Beth of Baton Rouge, LA, Tina Crowell of Baton Rouge, LA, and Clay Crowell of LA; and cousins, Marcia VanTil and her husband, Bernie of Iowa, Bill Crowell and his wife, Judy of Maryland, and Elaine Hayes and his wife, Jim of Texas.
Friends will be received Wednesday, July 3, 2013 from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 1232 National Road, Wheeling, WV, with Reverend Judy Fisher officiating.
