John Batton

BATTON, John William “Pickle,” 83, of New Martinsville, WV, died Monday, August 5, 2013, at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville.

He was born October 11, 1929, in New Martinsville, the son of the late Charles Okey and Mary Elizabeth Keller Batton.

Pickle was a former employee at PPG and Ormet and retired from Bayer. He was a life member of Moose Lodge #931 and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #39 A.F. & A.M., both of New Martinsville; Scottish Rite of Wheeling and Osiris Shriners; and a member of the First Baptist Church in New Martinsville. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, carpentry, traveling and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hetty Helen Hendricks Batton; a son, James D. Batton; and a brother, Charles Okey Batton Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Jeanne Arthur Batton; five children: Erica Jo (Timothy) Shiben of New Martinsville, Judy Ann (Jon) Stewart of Midland, NC, Charles Michael (Kathleen) Batton of New Martinsville, John Lyle (Nadine) Batton of Boston, MA, and Kimberly Jan (John) Boscia of Stafford, VA; two sisters, Marie Welfley of Akron, OH and Anna Lee (Tom) Emch of New Martinsville; stepchildren Bonnie Jo (Ernie) Voithofer of Smithfield, PA, and Michael Wayne (Iva) Hall of Knoxville, TN; and 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third St., New Martinsville. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the New Martinsville United Methodist Church, 10 Howard Jeffers Drive, New Martinsville, with Pastor Melissa Shortridge officiating.

Interment in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.
