BARKER, Bob L. “BUGS,” 80, of McMechen, WV, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
He was born December 21, 1932 in Parkersburg, WV, son of the late Clyde and Edith Shriver Barker.
Bob graduated from Union High School in 1950, was a fireman for the B&O Railroad, a foreman in the carpenters shop at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Plant in Martins Ferry, a member of Bricklayers Local #1 in Wheeling, returning in 1995 to date, being a member for 55 years in his trade, and served in the Army 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC.
Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose Marie Phipps Barker; two children, Rick Barker of Glen Dale, Traci (Joe) Polus of Glen Dale; four grandchildren; Bethani (Zachary) Vilkoski of McMechen, Misty (Chance) Kildow of Richmond, VA, Daniel Barker of McMechen and Lexi Tweedlie of Glen Dale.
Bob is also survived by his sister, Phyllis (Jack) Warsinsky of Benwood.
Bob loved sports, playing football, basketball and baseball in high school and football and baseball in the Airborne.
He was a football official and really enjoyed playing basketball with friends on Sunday afternoon. He was always willing to work on local projects when asked by local groups. He worked on buildings at the old McMechen Park and Center McMechen School, and also built a statue base in the courtyard of St. James Catholic Church.
Bob dearly loved his grandchildren and was always proud of them. He really enjoyed his summer trips to Myrtle Beach and had many friends, especially Jimbo and Anita Whitney and their children.
He was a member of the Benwood American Legion, and life member of the Ohio River Valley Elks in Martins Ferry, OH.
Bob’s family would like to thank Dr. Hess, Sue Brandt, and the fifth floor staff at Reynolds Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care. They will never be forgotten and always remembered for their friendship.
Friends will be received on Friday, November 8 from 2-8 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 214 Marshall St., McMechen where services will be held on Saturday, November 9 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bekah Utietiang officiating.
Burial will follow in McMechen Cemetery.
