Richard Steele

STEELE, Richard E., “Dick,” 91, formerly of Moundsville, W.Va., passed away Friday, February 14, 2014, in Heartland- Lansing Nursing Home, Bridgeport, Ohio.

Mr. Steele was born June 22, 1922, in Dallas, W.Va., a son of the late Oliver T. and Flora (Wallace) Steele.

He was a 1940 graduate of Cameron High School, and a retired welder for the Iron Workers Local 549, where he served three terms as business agent. He was also a Mason and Shriner; a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Moundsville; a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; and a member of the Cameron V.F.W.

Mr. Steele was a member of the Osiris Temple, Wheeling, having proudly served as past commander of the Legion of Honor. He was also a proud member of the Osiris Shrine Transportation Unit, having driven countless local young children to hospitals in Erie, Pa., and Cincinnati, Ohio.

In addition, he was a driver for Meals on Wheels in Marshall County; and enjoyed reading books to young children at elementary schools in the Moundsville area. He was also an avid photographer and gardener, and was well known for his green thumb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jacqueline (Grandstaff) Steele; second wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Steele; a son, Richard Gary Steele; two sisters, Kathryn “Katie” Bishop and Betty Knight; and a brother, Byron O. Steele.

Mr. Steele is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Page of Warwood, and Diana Steele of Toronto, Ohio; a grandson, Bryan Minor and his wife Maria, of Wheeling; and four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Monica, Thomas Richard and Luke Minor.

Mr. Steele’s family would like to sincerely thank the caring staff at the Heartland-Lansing Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, and 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m., Monday, February 17, 2014, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling. Rev. Tim Wilt, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Mounds-ville, will officiate the services.

Interment will follow in Halcyon Hills Memorial Park, Sherrard, W.Va., with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard.
