Sam Varlas

VARLAS, Sam Nick, 91, of Moundsville, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014, at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born August 4, 1922, in Moundsville, son of the late Nicholas and Helen Sarris Varlas.

Sam was a WWII Navy veteran, serving on the USS Lansdale DD-426 and the USS Dayton Nightfall Cruiser CL5 ships. He retired from maintenance at the former Allied Chemical/LCP Chemicals in Moundsville. He was a member of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, AHEPA at church, VFW Post 437 Moundsville, and the American Legion Post 3.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Angelina Maros Varlas; two brothers, Mike and Gus Varlas; and a sister, Mary Alice Sullivan.

He is survived by two brothers, George Varlas of Wheeling, and John Varlas and his wife, Nancy of Moundsville; two sisters, Carrie Georges of Blacksburg, VA, and Dorothy Andre and her husband, Nick of Poquoson, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received Monday, March 17, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling (304-232-2732). Trisagion service will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be celebrated Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, 2215 Chapline St., Wheeling, WV, 26003 with Father George L. Livanos officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery where Moundsville veterans honor guard will conduct military graveside services.
