John Planey Jr., 88, of Bellaire, Ohio, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Belmont Community Hospital in Bellaire, Ohio.

He was born November 16, 1925, in Stewartsville, Ohio, a son of the late John and Ella Rapotish Planey.

John was a retired from the maintenance department of First Energy’s R.E. Burger plant in Dilles Bottom, and a member of the Church of Christ in St. Joe. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a kind and gentle soul and loved by everyone. John was an avid Cleveland Browns football fan. “His Cleveland Browns were always going to win it all, this is going to be the year.”

John was a loving husband, father and friend. “He was always there for us, we could have never asked for a better father – Love you, rest in peace, always.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Irene Tomlinson Planey, on November 22, 2011; and his brother, Paul Planey.

Surviving are his one and only daughter, Jonne Planey Herman, and her husband, Michael, of St. Clairsville, Ohio; his brother, Fred Planey of Bellaire, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and special neighbors; and friends, the Jim Flanagan family.

Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Crematory, 441 37th St., Bellaire, Ohio, on Tuesday from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. with Evg. Jeffrey A. Kent officiating. Interment in the Armstrongs Mills Cemetery in Armstrongs Mills, Ohio.

The Belmont County Council of the American Legion will conduct full military honors at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
