Robert Horn

HORN, Robert Francis, 89, of New Martinsville, WV, passed away on April 3, 2014, in Wheeling Hospital.

He was born May 4, 1924 in Benwood, WV, a son of the late Emery and Mary (Masaryk) Horn.

Robert began his career as a welder at Vulcan Rail in Benwood, then at the Baltimore shipyard.

As World War II broke out, he joined the US Navy and became certified as an underwater welder and an underwater demolition man He served in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Indian and Pacific.

He circled the globe with the Navy many times.

At the conclusion of the war, Bob was a landing craft pilot and in training to land Marines on the beaches of the Philippines and Japan.

After the war he worked for Wheeling Steel, Blaw- Knox Corp. and Wheeling Machine Product Company.

Robert retired from Mobay Chemical Company in New Martinsville, WV, as a chemical operator in 1989.

Bob was an avid bowler winning numerous trophies in league play including a three game high series of 279.

His only guilty pleasure was playing the slot machines at Wheeling Island Casino.

He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Wheeling, VFW Blake Brothers, Post 46, Benwood, and a former member of the WV Chemical Operators Union and Elm Grove Civics.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nero Horn, a daughter, Linda Horn Gantzer, two brothers, Joseph Horn and Emery Horn, one sister, Mary Helen Horn, brother- in-law and sister-in-law, Danny and Lucy Nero.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, sitting in the sunshine, drinking coffee and fishing.

Surviving is one son, Robert (Lee) Horn of New Martinsville; three grandsons, Charles Gantzer and Thomas (Jill) Gantzer both of Sherrard, WV; Chris Horn (Coty Cole) of Wheeling, WV; a granddaughter, Adrienne (Jeremy) DeRicco of Pittsburgh, PA; one sister, Steffie Horn of Benwood, WV; three sisters-in-law, Emma Nero, Toni Nero and Rose Nero, two nieces, Donna Bilodeau and Cathy Noone of Moreno Valley, CA.

Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2014.

Interment with military honors in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

Special recognition goes out to Dennis Balcerek, Eva Rogalski, Senator Larry Edgell and his wife Ceci, Greg and Nancy Richmond for providing religious comfort over the years.
