OAKES – On Saturday, May 24, 2014, Frances Mae Bentzel Oakes, in her 97th year.

Friends received Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St., Wheeling, with services there at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.


Frances Mae Bentzel Oakes, 96, of Wheeling, WV, died Saturday, May 24, 2014 in Liza’s Place, Wheeling.

Frances was born June 6, 1917 in York, Pa. She was a Methodist by faith.

She was a retired teacher’s aide at the Jefferson County Schools and served with the Salvation Army. She graduated from the Salvation Army Officer’s Training College in New York City.

Frances loved her family and was the most loving, giving and charitable person you could ever meet.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Francis Oakes; and two brothers and a sister.

Surviving are her daughter, Sondra “Sam” Norman and her husband James of Wheeling, WV; her son, Ronald Oakes and his wife Sheila of Massillon, OH; three grandchildren: Jared Oakes and his wife, Becky, Ashley Backlund and her husband, Blake, and Joshua Norman and his wife, Claire; three great-grandchildren: Ashley Warfield, Emily Warfield and Max Backlund; and one nephew, Clyde Null and his wife, Patti.

Friends will be received Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St., Wheeling, WV from 5-8 p.m., where services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Eric Martin officiating. Interment held in Greenwood Cemetery.
