Jerome Eugene “Jerry” Wade, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in New Martinsville, WV on February 19, l934, a son of the late Chauncey Otis Wade and Lillie Barth Wade.

Upon graduating from Magnolia High School in 1952, Jerry began his career at PPG. After 39 years of service, spent mainly as an Instrumentician, he retired in 1991.

Jerry was an avid sportsman and hunter. While at Magnolia High School, he lettered all four years in football, basketball, and baseball and held several school records. Upon graduation, he received the Gerald Hammel Award for the most outstanding athlete. He went on to play various sports for independent teams throughout the area.

Jerry had a passion to share his love of sports with the youth of New Martinsville and, for many years, he coached Little League Baseball, Grasshopper Basketball, and also served as head coach for the St. Vincent de Paul Basketball Team.

In 1988, he was honored with the Magnolia High School Lifetime Achievement Award, and later he was also inducted into the New Martinsville American Bowling Congress Hall-of- Fame. According to him, however, his most treasured award was having the time to play with and “entertain” his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and spent many hours volunteering at their fish fries and Bingo games. In 2007, he was presented their Man-of-the-Year Award.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, James Lawrence Wade and Jack Lee Wade.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Jo Ann Herrmann Wade, whom he married on June 26, 1954; two daughters, Jan Ellen Crane of Durham, NC and Jacqueline Jean (John) Estep of Vienna, WV; one son, Jerome Eugene (Susie) Wade, Jr. of Lake Lotawana, MO; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jacqueline, and Scotty Crane, David (Megan) Underwood, Kristen (Hank) Cathey, Megan (George) Todd, Kelley Anne, Daniel, Andrew, and Morgan Wade; seven great-grandchildren, Emmy and Cameron Underwood, Madison, Bryce, and Connor Cathey, Nora and Ethan Todd. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Friends will be received at the Grisell Funeral Home, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, WV on Sunday, May 18, from 2- 4 and from 6-8 p.m. with rosary devotions at 6 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church in New Martinsville, on Monday, May 19, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Fr. John McDonough officiating. Burial to follow in Northview Cemetery.
