Patricia A. Block, 77, of New Martinsville, WV, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at home.

She was born June 18, 1936, in St. Louis, MO, a daughter of the late Emanuel and Alta Snow Peden.

A graduate of the University of Missouri with a bachelor of journalism, she was a former teacher, the long time editor of the Wetzel Chronicle, and later was a public relations specialist for West Virginia Northern Community College in New Martinsville.

She was the first woman elected to the Wetzel County Board of Education, a founding member of the League of Women Voters, the WVNCC Friends of the College and ArtsLink, the arts council of Wetzel and Tyler Counties.

She served on the first operating committee that restored the Lincoln Theater, then known as the Community Theater.

In 2003, she was honored as “Citizen of the Year” by the Greater New Martinsville Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kennett Block; a daughter, Sandra Block and her husband, Dennis Gainer of Arlington, VA; a son, Clifford A. “Chip” Block and his wife, Bonnie; two grandchildren, Candice and Brianna, all of Sterling, VA; a sister, Doloros (Dale) Babbitt of The Villages, FL.

The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third St., New Martinsville, WV.
