Fredrick E. “Red” O’Connor, 74, of Shadyside, OH, formerly of Martins Ferry, OH, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Shadyside Care center, Shadyside, OH.
He was born June 16, 1939, in Martins Ferry, a son of the late John and Edna (May) O’Connor.
He was a retired dispatcher from the McElroy Coal Mine. Red was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Martins Ferry and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-daughters, Charmagne Wolfe Goldberg, and Lelani Wolfe; two brothers, Jack and Bernard O’Connor; two sisters, Jackie O’Connor Snodgrass and Sarah O’Connor Stockman.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Gertrude (Habig) Wolfe O’Connor; daughters, April (Chris) Wheeler of Morgantown, WV, and Kimberly (Kurt) Reed of Colerain, OH; granddaughters, Barbara (Don) Mew, Brianna (Jack) Wycherly and Kassy Johnson; and three great-grandsons.
Friends will be received Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Martins Ferry, with Rev. Tom Marut officiating. Burial follows in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry.
Military honors will be presented Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home by the V.F.W. Belmont County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School, 20 N. 4th St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935.
