Samuel John Zoeckler Jr., 87, of Warwood, Wheeling, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 17, 2014, in Liza’s Place, Wheeling.
He was born on November 27, 1926, in Wheeling, W.Va., the son of the late Samuel Zoeckler Sr., (Oct. 23, 1889-Oct. 16, 1971) & Florence Mabel Moran Zoeckler (May 19, 1894-May 1, 1971).
Sam was the grandson of Louis & Mary Jane Welty Zoeckler and Casper & Mabel Lyons Moreno.
He was a 1945 graduate of Warwood High School. Sam served his country as a Sergeant and an Airplane Crew Chief in the U.S.Army-Air Forces from. Feb 18, 1944 – Dec. 7, 1946 during War World II. He was a retired maintenance engineer at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling from 1964-1991 and Oglebay Park 1957-1964. He was was a member of Warwood United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 1, Warwood Veteran Association, and Civil Air Patrol.
Sam was devoted to his family, liked building model airplanes, woodworking, was known for his ability to repair almost anything. Sam had an excellent sense of humor and several jokes for everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John, on May 18, 1964.
Surviving are his bride, Nellie Abercrombie Zoeckler, whom he married at Christ United Methodist Church on May 5, 1963; two sons, Arthur William Zoeckler of Warwood and Keith Gordon Zoeckler and his wife, Margaret of Bethlehem, WV; two grandchildren, Luke and Bridget Zoeckler; a sister, Ruth Zoeckler Dean of Wheeling; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Friday, June 20, 2014, 1-9 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home-Burke Chapel, 2101 Warwood Ave, Wheeling 304-277-2722, where services will held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at noon with the Rev. Glen Baker Jr. officiating. Interment in Mt. View Cemetery, Dallas, WV. Memorial contributions may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI of Greater Wheeling Inc.
