Gerald Martin “Jerry” Klug, 68, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, formerly of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014, in Wheeling Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jerry was born August 6, 1945, in Wheeling, a son of the late Dr. Thomas M. and Joanna (Murphy) Klug.

He was a Catholic by faith; attended St. Alphonsus Grade School, Wheeling; was a 1963 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School; and earned his Political Science degree at John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio.

He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, and following basic training, proudly graduated from Officer’s Candidate School. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Vietnam War and served as Infantry Unit Commander in the First Cavalry from August of 1969 to August of 1970.

After returning from Vietnam, he earned his Business degree at West Virginia University. He retired as an insurance underwriter for State Auto Insurance, Columbus, Ohio.

Jerry was a big West Virginia Mountaineer and Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He also was an avid cyclist, having participated in numerous biking events. Just last year, he bicycled 300 miles over a five-day period through the Allegheny Passage from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh. He was a member of American Legion, Post 159 and V.F.W. Post 5356, St. Clairsville; and the Elm Grove Eagles, Wheeling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Thomas J. Klug; and sister, Margaret Ryff.

Jerry is survived by his wife and loving companion of 16 years, Marcia R. (Porter) Klug; two sons, David Klug of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Christopher Klug of Wheeling; a step-son, Greg Potnick and his wife, Amy of Pataskala, Ohio; a step-daughter, Kelly Potnick of Wheeling; two sisters, Mary Catherine and Yvonne Klug, both of Wheeling; a brother-in-law, Jack Ryff of Fayetteville, Pa.; seven nieces; and two cats, Lulu and Tipper.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., Thursday, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2014, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Wheeling, with the Rev. Douglas A. Ondeck as celebrant.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, with full military honors provided by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
