Herbert G. Kappel, 94, of New Martinsville, died Sunday evening at his residence in Mt. Airy, North Carolina.
He was born Sept. 26, 1919, in New Martinsville to Carl and Carrie (Miller) Kappel, the seventh of ten children.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Wilda, in 2011. He is survived by one sister, Fritz Hill of New Martinsville; a daughter, Resa (John) Brewington of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a son, Gary (Stephanie) Kappel of Bethany, W.Va.; a grand-daughter, Laura (Michael) Brewington of Kailua, HI; a grandson, John (Lisa) Brewington of Independence, Ky., a great-grandson, Oliver Kappel Brewington also of Independence; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Magnolia High School in 1937. In the spring of 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in both the Pacific and European theaters during World War II. After the war, he continued to serve in the reserves until 1955, attaining the rank of captain.
He retired from PPG Industries Natrium plant after 33 years of service. He was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 131 for 25 years. He volunteered his services to a host of civic organizations during his lifetime including the volunteer fire department, emergency services,
The Helping Hand, and the Esther Crumbley Fund, as well as serving the First Christian Church of New Martinsville as deacon, elder, and church officer over the course of his long membership.
Family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Friday at the Grisell Funeral Home, 751 Third St., New Martinsville, WV.
Friends also received from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, corner of Maple and Locust Ave., New Martinsville with Dr. Rev. Victor Hunter officiating.
Interment will follow in the Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.
