Marguerite Kinney Burton, left this world on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.
She was born on June 18, 1943 in Wheeling, WV to John Wilkes and Mary Jones Kinney.
Her formative education occurred in the public schools in Wheeling where she was also an active member of Simpson United Methodist Church. She worked as a life guard at the YWCA during the summer months.
After graduating from Wheeling High School she attended West Liberty State College. She was an active member of the debate club, West Liberty Players, and spent summers serving as a counselor at Girl Scout Camp Gischoweco.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she obtained a master’s degree in Special Education from Marshall University.
She began her teaching career in McMechen, WV and later moved to Durham, NC to work at North Carolina Central University. While at NCCU she met and married Bowman Burton, Sr.
Over the course of her career, she positively impacted the lives of children in Alamance an Edgecombe Counties and Rocky Mount City Schools all in North Carolina and in Mecklenburg and Greensville County Schools both in Virginia.
After retiring from Greensville County schools she continued to impact the lives of children by serving for over ten years on the Greensville County School Board.
Marguerite was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association and served on the board for the local Extension Agency. She was a dedicated supporter of many local and national charities.
Marguerite was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church where she was a deaconess, a member of the Mother Board, and Missionary and a Sunday school teacher. She was often called upon to participate in various programs at many of the local churches.Her love of education was also evident at church, where she and Bowman taught and adult reading class.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents and oldest grandchild, Matthew J. Waters, IV (Quashaneshia).
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Bowman Burton, Sr.; daughters, Katrina Burton Waters, Oxford, NC and Michelle burton, Raleigh, NC; a son, Bowman Burton, Jr. (Aneta), of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Rose Kinney and Ellene Beard (Ronald) both of South Holland, IL, Helen Kinney, and Patricia Hill (William) both of Huntington, WV; brothers, John Kinney (Quentina) Ashland, VA, and Wilkes Kinney (Carolyn) Wheeling, WV; five grandchildren, Mattie, Mia, Kayla, Kamryn and Bowman III, affectionately known as Trey; five great- grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and caring friends.
