JOSEPH DUFFY

Our loving Father, Brother and Grandfather, Joseph Henry “Joe” Duffy, 82, of Wheeling, WV, passed into eternal rest on Monday, August 4, 2014 at UPMC, Presbyterian Hospital, in Pittsburgh, PA.

He was born March 4, 1932, in Wheeling, the son of the late Joseph and Nell Comer Duffy. Joe attended Wheeling Central Catholic High School Class of 1950 where he was an all around athlete and after graduation joined the Air Force, serving in the Korean War. While in the service, he was recruited by the CIA and served there for four years.

He grew his life in Wheeling, starting out as a meat cutter and eventually becoming President of JHD & Associates as an Insurance Broker and also built homes in the Ohio Valley. He was a retired Real Estate Broker at the time of his death.

As a young man, he was involved in politics as President of the Young Democrats and eventually ran for the House of Delegates and State Senate. Joe was a Deacon at St. John’s Episcopal Church; member and past exalted ruler of BPO Elks #28; and in his earlier years worked with the Nuns at The Home of the Good Shepherd.

A true Irishman, the love of his heritage brought him great joy and he was given the honorary title, Lordship of Ballyhale, County of Galway on one of his many visits to Ireland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Emma Gene Duffy, two brothers, William and Raymond Duffy; and his first wife, Jennie Duffy.

He leaves behind his four beloved daughters; Denise (Jeffrey) Johns, Laurinda Duffy, Christina Duffy Fung and Michelle Duffy; six brothers, Edward (Eileen) Duffy, Earl P. “Mickey” (Linda) Duffy, Patrick (Jane) Duffy, Larry (Debbie) Duffy, Thomas (Beverly) Duffy and Jay (Kathy) Duffy; and his loving sister Dorothy Ann (Charles) McKee; nine grandchildren, Lauren Johns Reeder, Kathleen, Emily and Zachary Johns, Shannon and Joseph Cerone, Tyler Duffy, Max and Nigel Fung; two great-grandchildren, Ian Foote and Ellis Wentzler, and countless loving nieces and nephews.

Joe touched the hearts of everyone, and made you feel like you were the only person in the room. We will miss the twinkle in his eye, his grace and kindness every day.

The Family will receive all friends on Thursday from 6-9 p.m., with BPO Elks #28 service at 8:30 p.m., at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 1 Ridgecrest Road, Bethlehem/Wheeling, where Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by the Moundsville Honor Guard Military Services.
