GEORGE MERRITT

George William Merritt, 96, of Wheeling, WV, formerly of the Warwood Home for Men, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at the Country Club Retirement Campus, Bellaire, OH.

He was born January 28, 1919, in Letart, WV, son of the late Barney A. and Carrie Wiles Merritt.

Mr. Merritt was retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., General Office, where he was manager of office building and office services. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of WWII, and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Mozart.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 1; Past Master, Ohio Lodge No.1 A.F.&A.M, Wheeling; and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Bodies of Wheeling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Ella Tully Merritt, in 2008.

Surviving are a daughter, Paula J. McDonald and her husband, Robert, of Wheeling, WV; a son, Douglas W. Merritt and his wife, Rebecca, of Wheeling, WV; three grandchildren, Carrie L. Cook and her husband, Brant, of Dublin, OH; Laura B. Blanchard and her husband, Robert, of Fenton, MI; and Mark D. Merritt and his wife, Tara, of State College, PA; six great-grandchildren, Molly and Julia Blanchard, Wesley and Zane Cook, and Liam and Lucy Merritt; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at the Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV (304-242-2311), where services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2015, with the Rev. Joel Richter officiating.

Interment at the convenience of the family.
